* Yes, yOur hOst played the same song twice. Umdali is that good. And it was a salute to The Electrifying Mojo and The Midnight Funk Association. When Purple Rain came out he played the album in full, straight through. Then, he flipped it over and started with Let’s Go Crazy and all of side one again (at least that’s how I remember it.) Was thinking of him this week, so many people talking about unity. The shows fostered unity without making an issue out of it. The Electrifying Mojo played what he liked and his tastes ranged wide. He is still alive, just kind of observing these days. Michigan radio was blessed in the 1980s, Ernie Harwell calling the Tigers games through sunset and The Electrifying Mojo coming in “for the nights of your life.”
“Will the members of the Midnight Funk Association please rise. Please go to your porch light and turn it on for the next hour to show us your solidarity. If you’re in your car please honk your horn and flash your lights, wherever you are. If you’re in bed, get ready to dance on your back, in Technicolor. And get ready for the MFA. The word is… Don’t say no, say triple-whammy-whoa. Hold on tight, don’t let go. Whenever you feel like you’re nearing the end of your rope, don’t slide off. Tie a knot. Keep hanging, keep remembering, that it ain’t nobody bad like you. This session of the International Midnight Funk Association is being called to order. Electrifying Mojo presiding. May the Funk be with you. Always…”
